The Breeding Program

Fernando and Joaquin's modest nature and open mindedness have allowed them to learn from the very best  and subsequently build a breeding program with a focused  philosophy  that has earned them the leading breeder of Argentina title four of the last seven years. Each Haras Mayed bred horse is chosen with care and assigned to initials JJ, which represents Joaquin and Javier, Fernando's two sons who love the Arabian horse. Joaquin explains its significance. In 200 years somebody will look at a pedigree of a horse that is JJ something and even if he doesn't know the horse, he can imagine the type of horse it would be. It would follow the Haras Mayed philosophy.

At Haras Mayed you can walk through the pastures and mare barns, see many beautiful mares, and athletic mares, some are less beautiful and perhaps more athletic, Joaquin feels this is okay, because we understand that the breeding of Arabian horses is a work in progress. If a mare has everything he desires (athletic ability, good conformation, bloodlines and type) but lacks a dished face, they are welcome in his pastures. He knows that Magnum Psyche will not only improve their already desirable qualities, but also give their foals exquisite faces.

Haras Mayed has collected a diverse group of broodmares that include  among others daughters of  *Aladdinn, *Cajun Prince HCF, Almaden and the largest collection of Bey Shah daughters. They have found thus far that Magnum Psyche has produced extremely well with all mare regardless of genotype or phenotype.  National mare  Maggdalina is a shining example of Magnum Psyches ability to cross well with Polish-bred mares. Joaquin also feels that Bey Shah mares are an exceptionally good cross.  Magnum Psyche has also proven to be successful cross on Russian bred mares, which is exemplified by his son, four time National Champion *Magnum Chall HVP, whose damline is predominately Russian. At 11 years old, there are sure to be many more wonderful crosses with Magnum to be found. In the 8 years Haras Mayed has been breeding Magnum Psyche they have been fortunate to breed a fine collection of Magnum Psyche daughters. Haras Mayed is selecting stallions to cross on their Magnum daughters.

Haras Mayed has also chosen to utilize young Magnum sons in their own breeding program.  JJ Senor Magnum , his son JJ Da Vinci and JJ El Bronz.

The Haras Mayed breeding program boasts great diversity, not only in its ability to serve breeders throughout the world with its various stallion stations, but also its ability to produce Arabian horses that excel in halter, performance and endurance. The characteristics we breed for in halter are the same characteristics that endurance requires, explains Joaquin. So, with the same breeding program, we are producing top-quality halter horses and endurance horses at the same time. In Argentina there is great enthusiasm for Magnum as an endurance sire because of the athletic ability he passes on.

Breeders and owners across the world who have embraced the Haras Mayed breeding program all agree that they have received excellent services and assistance with achieving their breeding goals and much more.  We invite everybody to come see the horses and share their opinions with us, offers Joaquin. The thing that I like most about breeding horses and going to shows are the people you meet and the friends you make the opportunity to share opinions, learn and sometimes change your mind for the better. My advice to anyone interested in Haras Mayed is to visit is at the farm, have a barbecue, see the horses and discuss what you see and what we see. What we would love is for people from all over the globe to share in our journey to success.

The Haras Mayed Breeding Program, Circa 2006

In a continuing effort to find excellent out crosses, the Santibanes regularly infuse new blood into the Haras Mayed breeding program –– via both stallions AND mares.

Their most recent acquisition was that of the magnificent *Aladdinn/*BASK++ bred United States National Champion Stallion, Legacy of Gold. The brilliant chestnut brings to the Haras Mayed program all of the traits most important to Fernando and Joaquin, in a pedigree that has already proven to be an extraordinary nick with Magnum.

Now . . .

a look at some of the members of the Haras Mayed equine family.
